Kids4Peace Boston – Honoring Dr. King: Serving Our Community

On Martin Luther King Day, Kids4Peace Boston participated for the second year in a volunteer program for homeless children and families run by Boston Cares.   We joined other teams at the Roxbury Athletic Center to create toddler beds and quilts for shelters, make up bedtime and craft kits for homeless children, and make “desks” that kids in shelters could use to study on, among other activities. Although not everyone could make it, those of us who did had a lot of fun. We began by making lap desks, from sanding down the wood to wrapping the foam bottoms in colored material to decorating the tops with encouraging words–such as “You can do it!” or “Be your best!”–with permanent markers. Paris drew a fabulously beautiful flower on hers and Isy sat at the cutting station, cutting foam for kids from local after-school programs. Nicole and I did some exploring and tried out the pillowcase decorating (which were filled with a book, handmade teddy bear, and toothbrush) and preparing multiplication flashcard kits. It was tons of fun, and there was plenty of room for creativity while being serious and helping others. I am so glad we decided to go a for a second year!
