Greetings from day one of the 2013 Kids4Peace camp in Ketura!
After a three hour journey into the desert, we arrived at a beautiful oasis in Ketura, Israel. We had a quick introductory group meeting before lunch. Starving and tired, we headed to the dining hall, where a group of the older Christian youth offered a blessing on the food.
In the afternoon, we went to the pool for a refreshing break from the desert heat. We had some fun with diving contests into the deep end and swimming races across the pool. We also played volleyball and had Popsicles.
In the evening, we boarded the bus and headed to the sand dunes near Ketura. We climbed to the top of the dunes and let loose! Kids and advisers were rolling down the mountains sand and jumping off the crest of the dunes. By the end, we emptying our ears and our pockets of sand.
For dinner, we walked down to the bottom of the dunes and sat around a campfire. We grilled our own pita over the fire, enjoyed falafel and hummus, and made s’mores for dessert.
Then, we turned off all of our lights, dimmed the fire, laid our heads’ back, and looked up to the stars and full moon. In the silence, we reflected on the first day and listened to the desert.
