Kids4Peace Boston participants from summer of 2011 and 2012, who have all been active in our Boston year-round program, reunited to travel back to camp recently! It was a weekend filled with laughter, song, reflection and peace leadership skill building.
As the group arrived back, the camp community welcomed them with open arms as friends were reunited and our Peace Leaders were delighted to once more absorb the abundance of nature, water, and joy throughout the camp.
After a quick lunch amidst the cacophony of song, the group focused on the skills of communication as they problem-solved their way through several team challenge obstacles out on the course. Isy, a 2011 participant, reflected during a particularly difficult moment for the group:
“It’s not about whether we’re right, it’s about getting to a consensus”
Later that evening the group focused on the meaning of interfaith and what their own faith means to them. Yosef, a 2012 participant, shared:
“Gd created us all to be equal. I don’t think he made any religion to be greater than the others.”
As the Shabbat candles flickered in the background, participants ended the day with games and laughter as they caught up on stories from the end of the school year, and the counselors prayed they’d go to bed easily!
The next day was filled with a morning on the high ropes course followed by swimming, hiking, sport, and sharing stories around the camp fire.
Once again, the Peace Leaders demonstrated a profound ability to compete through sport in a way that was truly rooted in peace. This was absolutely a “New Culture of Peace” in action! It was those simple acts of cooperation and creativity that left some of the strongest impressions with the adult leaders. These are some very inspiring teenagers!
The final morning, the group packed a to go lunch and trekked up to the top of Mt. Canaan for some incredible views of the Lakes Region in New Hampshire. They said their sad goodbyes to camp, piled in the van, and drove back home to eager parents. The group can’t wait to get together in September for our next event and is looking forward to a trip to camp again next summer!
